When decay has been taken out of the tooth, it is replaced with a “filling” material. In the past, amalgam (silver/mercury) fillings were placed into the cleaned-out portion of the tooth. With advancements in dentistry, you can now have tooth-colored fillings instead of silver fillings. Besides looking more natural, tooth-colored fillings bond to the remaining tooth, making it much stronger than one that is restored with a silver filling. You may even elect to remove your old silver fillings and replace them with natural tooth-colored fillings.
